In honour of International Women’s Day, I want to celebrate some of the women in our team who make my dental world go round. We are a busy Department caring for thousands of patients every year but I just wanted to stop to say thank you, thank you for all you do for our patients, thank you for supporting me and thank you for being part of our fantastic team.
Long before many of our patients are out of their beds, Denise is in work ensuring our clinic is fully stocked and and ready for the day ahead. She runs around after us all day, always ready with a smile and a cheery word. Thank you, Denise for all that you do. You are a gem and I appreciate your hard work.
Carly, Ciara, Hannah, Sarah-Jane and Yang See
And so to our trainees, I’m conscious that a new generation is coming up behind me and I find that exciting, not threatening. These girls have fresh ideas, they teach me as much as I teach them!
Fran and Lisa
I feel that Fran and Lisa deserve some sort of medal. As two of our Speciality dentists they work tirelessly, are reliable, conscientious and destined for great things. Our junior staff like Fran and Lisa are the backbone of our team. We need to support and develop them to the best of our abilities.
Gem, Naomi, Rashida and P
As the first port of call for patients arriving at our Department, our reception team somehow manage to keep smiling whilst simultaneously booking appointments and answering queries. I couldn’t do my job without them. Thank you ladies!
Jeanette is our dental therapist and she is the closest thing we have to magic. She has the patience of a saint, and then some! Jeanette’s forte is gently getting our little people used to coming to see us and supporting families to make changes to their diets. There is no use in just treating decay – we also have to educate our patients how to prevent it too. Jeanette – thank you for creating such positive dental experiences for so many families. We are so fortunate to benefit from your expertise.
Lisa and Sarah
Lisa and Sarah are our Assistant Directorate Managers and work hard to ensure that we are as efficient as we can be. They are both Prize Negotiators, can-do women who have worked their way up the ranks. Sarah used to be my dental nurse when I first moved to Manchester and I have almost forgiven her for moving to “the other side”.
Sharon is my medical secretary, but not just mine, she types all of the clinic letters coming from all of the clinicians in our team. Do you know how incredible that is? It’s beyond phenomenal. By the time I’ve had lunch, my morning clinic has been typed up – thats a big deal because it’s things like this that make a difference to patient care. Sharon – you are quite simply awesome. Thank you.
The UDHM Consultant Team
I feel truly privileged to stand alongside Anjali, Lucy, Siobhan (and Vidya – not pictured) as our Consultant team, as well as Kay and Jo who lead our sister team in the Children’s Hospital. Day in, day out these hardworking and dedicated ladies lead by example. We are all different with different interests and different strengths but we are united in our goals. Thank you all for choosing Manchester and for continuing to challenge me, as well as humouring me. It feels great to be part of such a dynamic team.
Our nursing team
And last, but certainly not least, to our nursing team. It takes a very special dental nurse to chose to work with children. You need to be patient, yet efficient, fun, yet sometimes firm and have a full knowledge of all things Disney! But these girls do more than just “assist” they support, chaperone, coach, teach and advise. I value each and every one of them. Girls (all of you, not just those of you I cajoled into this photo) – thank you for going that extra mile. Thank you for the care and compassion you show our patients day in day out. I watch you all with great pride.
So you have reached the end of my whistle stop tour of some of the amazing women who make my dental world go round. There are, of course, many more – those belonging to the teams who support me in theatre, those that were busy working elsewhere or in other hospitals and those who were a little camera shy. Please know that I appreciate each and every one of you. Happy Women’s Day. You rock.
